Why flies investigate bins
Flies are attracted to decomposing organic material. Small leaks or scraps left after pickup may provide odor and moisture cues.

Maggots are fly larvae. They may appear when flies reach suitable organic material before or inside the bin.
Cleaning reduces attractants
Professional cleaning removes the stuck on residue that can contribute to odor and pest attraction. It does not replace secure bags, a closed lid, or general property pest control.
Why insects appear around trash carts
Flies can be attracted to exposed food scraps, meat packaging, spilled liquids and other organic waste. If eggs are laid in suitable material, larvae may develop even when the trash container is outdoors. Cleaning a wheeled bin can remove residue, but it cannot prevent insects from returning while attractive waste remains.
Keeping lids closed where feasible, avoiding torn garbage bags and bagging wet scraps securely may reduce the conditions that attract insects. Residents should follow their local waste-hauler instructions when managing bins after a missed collection.
What to do before a professional cleaning appointment
Avoid handling unknown chemicals or potentially hazardous material in a bin. Ensure the assigned cleaning date is confirmed, and set out the two eligible empty rolling carts at the location NTBC has approved. Keep children and animals away from areas where technicians are operating. Heavy infestation, dangerous contents or strong chemical contamination may require specialist assessment before routine washing is suitable.
Do not mix bleach with ammonia, acids or other cleaners in a trash bin. Pressure-washing without containing wastewater may create messy runoff; a qualified provider should use appropriate wash-water management for the job.
When routine washing helps and when it does not
Machine washing aims to remove residual organic deposits and clean hard-to-reach surfaces, potentially making it easier to keep bins free of odor between pickups. Cleaning does not substitute for professional pest-control work or eliminate all potential insects from a property.
NTBC requires at least two compatible wheeled trash and/or recycling bins for residential service. Compare odor causes and cleaning frequency to decide whether a one-time or recurring appointment fits your needs.
